A Basic Understanding of Enzymes

Did you know that enzymes are critical in a person’s ability to think, see, feel, and breathe? In fact, enzymes are primarily responsible for the health and proper functioning of your immune system, your liver, kidneys, digestive system, bloodstream, pancreas, and spleen as well as the proper utilization of nutrients and production of all the hormones in the human body body. 

Enzymes are proteins that assist the progress of all the chemical reactions that occur in the human body and in all other living organisms, for that matter. Enzymes are essential for every single chemical action. All the bones, tissues, muscles, organs, and cells are governed by enzymes. 

There are enzymes that are naturally produced by the body. However, there are also enzymes which the body cannot synthesize. Commonly, the enzymes which the body is not able to produce are referred to as non essential enzymes. Examples of such include phenylalanine, threonine, isoleucine, leucine, methionine, and lysine.  

Both essential and none essential enzymes are generally needed by the body, they are simply tagged as such to emphasize that the enzymes the body is unable to produce is just as essential as the ones that the body is able to produce. You see, enzymes work hand in hand.  

Although there are enzymes that do not require additional components not be able to perform at its maximum, there are others that do need cofactors to show full activity. Also, there are small organic molecules responsible for transporting chemical groups from one enzyme to another. These are called coenzymes. Examples of these are thiamine, riboflavin, and folic acid and are basically derived from food since the body is unable to produce these molecules. 

There are situations in wherein specific enzymes are not adequately produced or taken in by the body causing particular medical conditions. Thus, there are enzyme supplements that are sold in the market to answer to such needs. But aside from supplements, certain enzymes are generally derived from fruits, vegetables, and protein. 

Suffice it to say, disorders and irregularities in the human body can be attributed to the enzymes in the body, or the shortage of the necessary enzymes to be exact. You see, each enzyme is assigned with a particular task to perform. It is actually nature’s way of conserving energy.  

There are over 2,700 known enzymes in the human body and many are yet to be discovered. Each of these is assigned with a specific task in order to perform efficiently. And collectively, these enzymes give life to an organism.

Distinguishing Essential and Non Essential Enzymes

However, there are enzymes that are not synthesized by the human body. These are commonly referred to as essential enzymes. These enzymes are derived from dietary proteins and supplements. Examples of non essential enzymes include isoleucine, leucine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, and lysine.  

The designated terms do not exactly mean that enzymes belonging to either category are more essential or least important than others. On the contrary, all enzymes are needed by the body, no matter how much or less of a particular enzyme is needed. The term essential simply connotes that despite it not produced naturally by the body, these enzymes are as crucial as the ones produced by the body.
